Collage art is something I already found very interesting as a young child. Organizing and assembling different images into something new and unique is such a fun activity and can lead to unexpected and exciting results. My interest in collage art was probably sparked by encountering the collages of Dada artists like Hannah Hoch and Raoul Hausmann in some art books. The combination of typography, use of color, and random images captured my imagination.
Female body parts have played a prominent role in my collages
In this recent (2024) series of collages, I combine typography with images of female bodies and my own handwriting on 42x62cm paper. For years, female body parts have played a prominent role in my collages. I often combine this with industrial and abstract elements.
Because of the use of female body parts it caused me many problems on social media, as automated censorship now plays a dominant role in controlling the art world. We do not fully realize the negative effect of these powerful companies and the influence they have on art. My artworks remain virtually invisible because these companies impose a clear stamp on how art should look for the general public.
Say FU to the way they control what we see
The series FU consists of a type of artworks that I can hardly show on social media anymore. FU is a well-known abbreviation and message that I have for these companies, but the Chinese character Fu also stands for good luck, good fortune, and blessing. Sometimes it also means happiness.
Contrasts give depth to art, and in our current society, this is the perfect breeding ground for artists to make their voices heard. As a society, it is important to stay aware that we should not let our free voice be dictated by these technological companies. We all have the choice to withdraw from the influence of these powerful platforms and say FU to the way they control what we see -and especially- what we do not see.
